John Constantine was born able to see demons and after many torturous years of medicine and psychiatry, he attempted to commit suicide as a teenager. He died for two minutes and was doomed to Hell under the rules of Catholicism. When he comes back, he spends his life trying to buy his way back to heaven by exorcising demons. Around the same time he discovers that he’s terminally ill, he comes across peculiar cases of demonic happenings that alerts him something majorly hellish is happening.

I’m a lover of the satanic genre, and when I saw the the cool plot line I quickly jumped on watching it. I’m not familiar with the comic and other reviews I read actually said it was a disgrace to the original, but I enjoyed the movie anyway. You’ll get a good taste of character in John’s cool reluctance to help others yet desperate need to gain access to heaven soon due to his lung cancer. Shia LaBeouf shows up as a throwaway character who only appears in the beginning and the end of the movie, and no one cares about him even though he had a somewhat major role in the end. Their depiction of Satan is quite unique too. I thought it was weird he didn’t even know what was going on throughout the plot of the whole movie, but maybe that’s how they wanted it. The setting is well done and the special effects are exciting. Keanu Reeves is such a cool guy. But his dialogue was stiff and some moments were cheesy. It’s a solid movie that could use some polishing, and a good pick for a weeknight you can kill. Just ignore Shia.
