With high expectations for part two of Marvel’s best movie to date, many would have expected the same level of signature down-to-earth humor and action packed storyline. GotG Vol. 1 is their most successful attempt at combining these nearly immiscible elements (the only one in my opinion), and its success is what made it stand out so spectacularly.

But the sequel? Boring.

Damn.

The crew begins this adventure by antagonizing a society of gold people and Star-Lord running into his father along the way. Ok, this should be a pretty big deal right? You learn of Peter’s history and how it led to his upbringing in space. The reaction from the audience? The woman to my left snored through the next 45 minutes and the man on my right decided to leave and take his restless kids home.

The movie is full of things like villains I didn’t care about, character conflicts I didn’t care about, Peter’s dad I didn’t care about, and the death of a character I was supposed to care about but didn’t care about. The Saturday morning cartoons I used to watch carried more weight than this film. There were a few glimmers of humor, but if you watched the trailer, you saw half of those scenes already. This sequel suffered what most sequels do – lack of novelty and a literally sleep-inducing storyline.

Final Thoughts

It didn’t live up to expectations set by the first film, which was hard to do considering Vol. 1 is the best Marvel movie to date. Vol. 2 had a few moments but overall it was a snoozefest.
