The reason I watched this movie was because I heard the song first and then looked it up. So please listen to it while you read:

What drew me to watch the film was the story: two lovers across three time periods are in search of something. The man is always seeking the answer, whether it be the cure to cancer or the key to ending a war. The woman looks to find peace, within herself and the people around her. There is the overarching theme of immortality – the search for the ultimate solution to everything. It brings up questions like what would you do for the people you love and what should you do for the people you love?

The movie’s visuals and stories are hauntingly beautiful, much like the song. The present day story covers a man who spends a lot of time researching for the cure to brain cancer, but in doing so spends all his time away from his wife who…suffers from brain cancer. The girl writes a book where the story is about a Spanish conquistador who searches for the Tree of Life in South America, and he faces opposition because he is risking his country’s fate on a loony search. The story set in the future is about a guy in a space bubble floating up to a star.

So yeah, the future story makes no sense and is purely stylistic. There are some creepy and weird scenes and things just don’t make sense. It tries to draw all the elements of the story together, but I feel it was not done very well and was a risky attempt at something too artistic.

Though I really enjoyed the story and all the paralleled themes, it was the sci-fi portion that went too far off into the “what is happening” direction and didn’t really pull the movie together.
