A brief history of the watches I’ve worn in my life: a Casio Baby-G Whale (the animals were cool), a minimalistic Target watch, an Esprit chronograph, an Aroma mechanical watch, and a Casio G-Shock. I’m certainly not a watch connoisseur and not much of an ardent watch-wearer either. My tastes lie in things with interesting features, of which these watches had one or two. I was satisfied with my latest G-Shock and probably wore that one the longest, then my parents gave me this Citizen watch as a graduation present. I’ve always enjoyed having those one or two things to show off about the watch I was wearing…this one had enough to make conversations uncomfortable.

  • Eco-Drive (solar-powered)
  • Japanese Quartz Movement
  • Dual World Time
  • 24-hour Time
  • Power Reserve Indicator
  • Luminous Hands
  • Weekday
  • Date
  • Perpetual Calendar
  • DST indicator
  • Power Save Mode (auto and manual)
  • Alarm
  • Radio Controlled Atomic Time
  • Sapphire Crystal Glass
  • Water Resistant 20 Bar

I just can’t get over how awesome everything is. Solar powered means you never have to change the battery. Radio controlled atomic time (which is received nightly) means you never have to readjust the time or the calendar. Dual World Time makes this watch easy for travelers, especially those who constantly move between two time zones. Pressing the top and bottom buttons simultaneously will switch the large and small faces’ time. The hand motions are nice. Pressing the buttons separately will display information like selected time zones and radio signal success, and the hands will wiggle to indicate which setting you’re looking at. The animations are helpful and cool but the initial set up is still complex and I had to read the manual and watch the video several times to get things right. Reading the face requires a slight effort because there’s a lot going on and the weekday meter is sometimes covered by the hands. There are so many functions and details but these are the kinds of complications that give you more satisfaction.

It’s a professional and attractive watch that expertly accomplishes the combination of classy and functional. This is the watch that got me into watches, and the one I’m sure to stick with for a very long time. With a price-tag ranging from $300-$500, it will be hard to find another watch with comparable quality and capabilities. It beats many higher-priced watches and is easily one of the best deals.
